Ancient Egyptians of 2600 BC during the Old Kingdom buried 2 ships near the Great Pyramid of Pharaoh Cheops (Khufu) and the ships are known as “Cheops boats,” Cheops ships,” “Khufu ships,” or “solar ships.” The papyriform “Cheops 1” (the only one excavated) shows a cabin that used a fly roof as an air-conditioner by stretching a canvas tarp over the wooden frame and soaking the tarp with water for evaporative cooling--causing the building to sweat so the pharaoh didn't have to:

Ancient Egyptian air conditioning systems were along the line of what we might call “swamp coolers” today; they were evaporative units ( malqaf ).
During most of the year, the wind in Egypt is from the north. That provided two ongoing bonuses. The Egyptians could “float” downstream ( south to north ) and with the wind from the north, could use sails to get back up the river again ( north to south ). It also meant that ‘wind catchers’ could be placed on top of various buildings, such as homes, and as long as the north wind blew, it provided a steady stream of air into the interior. The Egyptians then placed pads of water soaked linen in the path of the moving air and the evaporation cooled the air before it entered the house. Some of these units had roof tanks which were filled with water and a slow drip kept the pads moist – - thus the need for our plumber.
This ancient air conditioning technique can be compared to the modern day "flying roofs" and "evaporative coolers". Like Rain said, the Egyptians took advantage of the abundant north wind. They added sails to their boats, made ancient wind vanes and air conditioning techniques by directing the wind downwards, combined with the soaked tarp.
Today, these techniques are now applied by most roofing contractors. Vancouver has a lot of establishments that uses a fly roof - a roof not attached to the structure's wall - letting air pass through. This style was derived from the ancient Egyptian's ingenious manipulation of the incoming north wind.
